As born and bred Bangkokians, our go-to place to shop, binge on coffee and bingsu, eat like there’s no tomorrow, try on sneakers and not buy (we’re looking at you, “shoppers” on ground floor), and cool off as we trudge from Siam BTS Station to Siam Discovery is Siam Center.
And now we have one more very important reason to head over to Siam Center…ever heard of Tobias Rehberger?

In case you haven’t, he is the man responsible for a lot of visually stunning contemporary installations that play with lighting and surroundings to create a meaningful and experiential piece of art. The Frankfurt-based artist is known by many in the art scene as a sculptor and visual artist of his generation — surely, you have come across his work.

The latest opus from the mind and craftsmanship of Tobias Rehberger and local Thai artists is up (literally) in Siam Center. It is anything but ordinary. From mere observation, it is a cluster of bright neon lights grouped together, but don’t be fooled by the neon — this is no simple light installation.
The words read ‘Free parking, Free coffee, Freedom’ – based off its ‘Free’ concept, as explained by the artist himself, “Freedom here is a revolution inside a mall, challenging your view of what is free and what is fun. It’s a bit of irony in itself”.

There’s no need to observe from afar, because you can get right up close and play with this artwork. We told you this is an interactive installation, remember? The neon lights flick to the beats and tunes of your own personal playlist. Plug in their 3.5mm jack to any phone device, play your favorite songs, and watch the world brighten up. If browsing through your playlist takes too long, here’s ours.
Sorry iPhone users, please bring your own dongle.
The installation is on display only until Sep 15, so do hurry and stop by to enjoy the vibes and live beats from local DJs on the weekends at Siam Center. To learn more about the event and how you can get free coffee and refreshing beverages, click here.
