Zika tests on 6-year-old boy in Lanmadaw come back negative

Earlier this month, a six-year-old child from Lanmadaw was suspected of being infected with the Zika virus. However, test results have confirmed that the child does not have the virus.

“The results of the child from Lanmadaw township are negative [for the Zika virus]. Of the 57 suspected cases so far in Myanmar, only one person has been found to have the virus,” Dr Aung Thu of the Department of Public Health told the Myanmar Times.

Myanmar’s first and (so far) only case of Zika was announced last month when it was confirmed that a pregnant foreign woman had contracted the virus.

Since then, the Department has tested approximately 50 potential Zika cases. All have come back negative.

Earlier this year, Myanmar was included in a US travel warning list of 11 Southeast Asian countries where the risk of contracting Zika was high. The list was particularly aimed at pregnant women and urged them to postpone travel to the region.
