Woman held at knifepoint inside home, robbed of necklace worth K2.8 million

A woman was robbed at knifepoint inside her house on Tuesday night while her husband and grandson were both home. The thief was scared off before he could take much, but he did get away with the victim’s gold necklace worth over MMK2 million.

As Eleven reports, the incident took place around 8pm in the town of Hinthada in a house the couple shared with their children and grandson.

Wai Lin, the victim’s son, was not home at the time. He told Eleven that his father was praying in the prayer room while his mother and son were playing in the living room.

“A clean-shaven young man, around 25-years-old, arrived in front of the house on his motorcycle. He asked [my mom] if the sayama was home,” Wai Lin recalls, using the Burmese word for ‘female teacher. Wai Lin’s sister is a high school teacher and is known as sayama around the neighborhood. However, she wasn’t home at the time, as Wai Lin’s mother told the young man.

“He said that he wanted to give [my sister] a book so my mom told him to hand it over. She still hadn’t opened the gate for him at this point.

“He then asked if he could have a glass of water so my mother let him in. As soon as she filled the glass with water and turned around, he was pushing the tip of a knife up to her throat.”

According to the victim, the knife was an everyday kitchen knife measuring approximately 10 inches in length.

The man told Wai Lin’s mom to “give me everything you have,” so she took off her necklace and handed it over.

Thankfully, the man didn’t get a chance to take anything else or do any real harm. Hearing the commotion outside, Wai Lin’s father came out of the prayer room to see what was going on, scaring the culprit, who drove away on his bike.

The family instantly called the police, who came to investigate the scene, as well as collect evidence and witness testimonies.

Fortunately, Wai Lin’s mom did not suffer any physical injuries. According to the family, the necklace is worth an estimated K2.8 million.

A case has been opened under Section 392 for robbery, and an investigation is underway to track down the as-yet unidentified culprit.
