What’s with all the blackouts?

This report is coming at you from a puddle of sweat in downtown Yangon.

Like many Yangon residents, Kelly Tuppen began questioning her life decisions after two consecutive days without a steady stream of cold air blasting into her face.

“My students were falling asleep at their desks and asking me why I was so wet,” she told Coconuts Yangon.

Blackouts, which are less common this time of year, have hit various parts of Yangon over the last two days, but for more than one reason.

On Tuesday, the system that delivers liquid pertroleum gas from the Yadana offshore platform to Yangon was damaged, causing the Ywama and Hlawga power stations to stop working. The Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation announced that blackouts would hit some parts of Yangon between 4 and 10pm.

On Wednesday, the YESC reported a system breakdown on the 230KV Taungoo-Thayagone power line in Bago Region at 4:50pm, which caused blackouts in downtown Yangon and other parts of the city.

Surely, the gods must have run out of ways to invonvenience us after all that.
