A warm(er) winter might be headed our way

Great news for all you summer-lovers in Myanmar: this winter might just be hotter than past years, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

“Temperatures in Yangon will be as usual. However, upper parts of Myanmar such as Kachin state, the upper Sagaing region, and northern Shan state might experience higher night temperatures. Due to global warming, temperatures seem to be increasing from year to year,” said Dr Kyaw Moe Oo, the department’s deputy director general, reported Eleven.

Although November is technically the start of winter, storms formed in the Bay of Bengal have left behind clouds that are affecting the weather across Myanmar.

“Right now, the sea surface temperature is around 128 degrees Fahrenheit [53 degrees Celsius], which is slightly warmer than usual. As a result, we need to keep a close eye on the air in this region.”

However, this doesn’t mean that the rainy season is completely behind us.

“Because it’s winter, the rains have stopped. However, if there is a storm in the Bay of Bengal or the South China Sea, there’s a chance that we could get some more rainfall as a result,” explained Dr Kyaw Moe Oo.

“Unusual night temperatures have been recorded in Hakha (5 degrees C), Loilin (8 degrees C), and Khantee (9 degrees C).”

We’re sure this is great news for all those tourists who planned their visit during the “cool season” only to find themselves sweating it out in Bogyoke market.
