As you might know, we are big fans of the U Thant house.
In December, we said that “it isn’t like other museums, and it isn’t like other restored homes.”
The two-story villa, first built in 1921 as housing for colonial officials, sits at the end of a quiet gravel path on Panwa Road in Kamaryut Towship.
The self-guided exhibit is split up into cozy rooms, each dedicated to different periods of U Thant’s life and career: Early Life, Educator, Writer, Public Servant, Secretary-General U Thant, Peacemaker.
It’s a place you want to linger in, and now there may be more excuses to stick around a little longer.
And now, the house is thinking about adding a little coffee shop, a bookstore and a library, according to the Voice.
But the timing is far from specific.
Khine Zar Kyi Lwin, program manager of the team working on the house, avoided giving a direct timeline, saying “we will do this when we have enough of a budget.”
CLARIFICATION: Thant Myint-U, chairman of the Yangon Heritage Trust, which manages the site, says the plans are far from concrete. In a comment on our Facebook page, he wrote that they are “only thinking of a possible additional structure in the future on the same grounds to house a library and conference room and possibly a small cafe or bookshop to pay for the upkeep of the house.” The headline and parts of the post have been updated to reflect his comments.
