With yesterday’s massive rally at Thuwanna pagoda in Thingyangun Township, the opposition certainly proved they can pull a crowd in Yangon. But will the same apply nationwide at the polls on Sunday?
Aung San Suu Kyi certainly thinks so.
Addressing tens of thousands of cheering, red-clad supporters who gathered at Myo Oo pagoda, the National League for Democracy leader said the huge turnout there reflected the party’s nationwide popularity.
“I appreciate the people who came here to support us,” she said. “Our power is the people’s power. Different ethnic groups and classes can be seen in the Yangon Region. So, I assume that the support of Yangon Region is the reflection of the support of the whole country.”
NLD fans of all ages, plastered with party stickers, waited in the hot sun from morning until Suu Kyi’s arrival at around 4pm. As she passed through the crowd, waving from the top of an SUV, they burst into applause and chants.
In her speech, which lasted until after sundown, the Nobel Laureate also called on supporters to beware of fraud on election day.
She said she would work with any political party for the good of the country.
