The rainy season may have just barely started — although with this week’s heat, it feels like Mother Nature is having a change of heart — but the rains and winds have already been doing damage across the country.
According to a report obtained by 7Day, in the last two months, heavy winds have caused 17 deaths and 27 serious injuries, and damaged over 10,000 residential properties. The statistics, provided by the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement were accumulated between March 6 and May 18.
Earlier this month, the Myanmar Times reported that 23 people died between April 1 and May 9 as a result of being hit by lightning.
Starting this April, the ministry has been providing families who have lost a relative or house to natural events a compensation of MMK300,000, which is K200,000 more than the previous compensation sum of K100,000. A ministry official told 7Day that the department has donated over MMK600 million so far this rainy season.
