Strand Road warehouses to get new life as art galleries

The Yangon Region government has announced that warehouses along Strand Road will be converted into art galleries in the process of transforming Yangon’s downtown waterfront area into a tourist attraction.

Daw Naw Pan Thinzar Myo, the Kayin Ethnic Affairs Minister for Yangon Region, said walls along Strand Road will be demolished and spaces will be renovated so that people can enjoy views of the Yangon River.

“There are around seven warehouses. Our State Counsellor asked us to look at examples in France and England. We have learned that these countries renovated old train stations and complemented them with modern buildings. These warehouses will become galleries and will be an attraction for tourists. They will display real works of art, like a second Bogyoke Market,” she said.

She also said that the warehouses will be connected, and renovations will preserve heritage architecture for public enjoyment. The project is projected to be completed in March 2017.

After the warehouses are renovated, an art festival called ‘My Yangon, My Home’ will be held in cooperation with the UK embassy.

The Yangon Region government recently hosted the Mingalaba Festival and the Yangon Living Street experience and plans to organize more festivals in the city during the tourism high season.
