An incident involving what officials believe is a drunk driver left three dead, and several others injured in Mandalay’s Chanmyathazi Township.
As 7Day reports, the accident took place around 1am yesterday morning. A group of police officers and firemen who were on the night shift had stopped and questioned three men on a motorbike. While they were talking, a white Honda Fit crashed into the group.
One police officer, one fireman, and one of the men being questioned died as a result. An additional eight people, including three more police officers, were injured and sent to the Mandalay General Hospital.
“He appears to have been drunk. It wasn’t intentional, but his drunk driving resulted in the loss of lives,” Colonel Aung Soe Lwin of the Mandalay Regional Police Force said to 7Day.
“The officer who died was just a cadet. He hadn’t even received an identification number yet.”
The culprit, a 28-year-old man, was taken into custody and examined to determine if he was under the influence while behind the wheel. His car has also been impounded while authorities check whether it is an unlicensed vehicle.
He is currently being charged under Sections 304a (“Causing death by negligence”), 333 (“Voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty”), and 338 (“Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others”) of the Myanmar Penal Code.
