Secretariat to open to the public for one day only

Yangonites, don’t miss the chance to get an extremely rare look into the sprawling colonial-era Secretariat, normally closed to the public, when it opens on July 19 for Martyrs’ Day celebrations.

The former government building where independence leader Aung San was shot dead in 1947 is usually off-limits, sitting moldering and mildew-coated on Mahabandoola Road. Renovation is allegedly underway.

But next Tuesday, for the third year in a row, it will be open, officials told the Myanmar Times. You can walk in, for free, from 9:30am until 5pm.

On Martyrs’ Day in 2014, the building opened to the public for the first time in decades. It opened again to bigger crowds last year, just for the day.

We can probably expect a more orchestrated event this time, though, after Yangon Heritage Trust members expressed concern last year at the number of curious visitors venturing into off-limit areas of the compound.
