After his Facebook post calling Yangon’s mayor a “windbag” went viral, an NLD lawmaker has doubled down on his comments, blasting the Yangon mayor in several interviews with local media outlets, comparing the Yangon mayor’s performance to “feces.”

That latter comment came in a Monday interview with the Irrawaddy in which he compare Mayor Maung Maung Soe with his counterpart in Mandalay.

“Though I am a lawmaker, let me speak colloquially: they are as different as fragrance and feces,” Lower House lawmaker U Bo Bo Oo said.

Three cheers for civil discourse!

He then went on to call out Yangon’s mayor for not “carrying out his duties,” and neglecting the city’s problems.

“As he is the mayor, anything related to the development of the city is his duty. He has ultimate responsibility. He must be able to manage [the city] properly. But I’ve found that he has neglected that duty,” Bo Bo told The Irrawaddy.

In another interview, this with Khit Thit Media, he listed the issues that his township was facing before wrapping it up by defending his name-calling.

“They have to take responsibility for all of the problems that the city’s residents are facing because of mismanagement. They haven’t taken any action to help us and that’s why I’m calling them windbags,” he said.

The outspoken NLD lawmaker had been ramping up his criticisms of Yangon’s municipality, highlighting a news article on his personal Facebook page that praised Mandalay’s city management, and sharing cartoons satirizing YCDC officials.

Days after this comments were widely shared online, the Yangon municipality seemingly took notice, sending dozens of workers to Sanchaung township to clear street stalls, advertisements, storefronts and any structures that blocked pedestrian space along Bagaya road and other Sanchaung streets.
