A police officer was arrested yesterday after his colleagues discovered he had broken into a home in downtown Yangon and stolen jewelry worth around US$5,300.

The home, located near Ye Kyaw Market in Pazundaung Township, was inhabited by two women, aged 56 and 74.

As the police officer made off with the stolen items, his license plate was caught on CCTV. Other police were able to trace the number and apprehended their colleague at the police staff quarters in Kyaikkasan, where they also found the stolen jewelry.

The police-turned-burglar is now under investigation for theft and breach of police conduct.
