Police officer killed by drunk driver while investigating car crash

A police officer was killed on Monday by a drunk driver who drove onto the scene of an earlier car accident.

Around 2am on Monday, the Kamaryut police station was informed of a vehicular accident on University Avenue Road, Mizzima reports. Following the call, a group of officers went to the scene of the accident to investigate.

While they were examining the site, a speeding Honda Civic ran into one of the officers, instantly killing him on the spot. The victim has been identified as Deputy Police Chief Soe Aung.

The driver was immediately taken into custody, and it has been confirmed that he was inebriated while behind the wheel.
