A video that has garnered tens of thousands of shares on Facebook has revealed a new source of worry for drivers, especially during the rainy season: metal nails hidden hidden inside potholes.

On Sunday, Facebook user Khin Su Su Zaw broadcasted a Facebook Live video explaining that she was walking back home when she saw a man picking up things along the road, despite the fact that it was raining quite heavily.

“It was pouring down and I saw someone taking items out of a pothole in our road so I went and asked him what he was doing. He told me that he’s been regularly retrieving these nails for a long time,” she explained, holding a handful of rusted metal nails up to the camera. Shocked at how many nails he had already recovered on that one day, Khin Su Su Zaw joined him and collected several dozens more herself.

She goes on to point out: “If this has been happening on multiple occasions, then it can’t be a case of the nails accidentally falling out onto the road.”

Following the broadcast, she uploaded another post with a photo of the nails, as well as a video of her actually retrieving them from within a pothole.

Although she can’t know for certain why these nails were placed on the road, Khin Su Su Zaw believes that it was obviously done so with malicious intentions. She explained: “During the daytime, there are a lot of cars that pass by this road. However, at night, there are no street lights and it’s dark and there aren’t many people around. I’m worried accidents will start happening.”

If you think the photo shows a lot of nails, Khin Su Su Zaw noted that she and the uncle actually collected a lot more than what she’s posted. “This is just what I could carry back in one hand,” she wrote.

Khin Su Su Zaw stated that she hopes that sharing this on social media will not only warn drivers, but that it will also prompt authorities to locate and take legal action against the perpetrators.

We’re thankful for good samaritans such as Khin Su Su Zaw and the uncle for going out of their way to protect their fellow citizens from harm. Here’s hoping that police actually try to find and catch the perpetrators, and that they do so sooner rather than later.
