You know what’s worse than an elephant dying? A little baby elephant dying.

Unfortunately, on Sunday, Pathein authorities had to cremate a two month old wild elephant that was discovered dead inside a well near the town of Ngwe Saung.

Due to his young age, the elephant was only a little over three feet tall. Authorities think that he fell and became trapped in the empty well, and eventually died of natural causes.

Speaking to 7Day, an official from the Pathein Township’s Department of Forestry confirmed: “The elephant was only two months old. He couldn’t climb back out of the well, and he died of starvation and thirst. According to the doctor, he’d been dead for eight days.”

It was only when it started raining over the weekend that the well filled up and nearby residents saw the floating body. He was cremated not far from where he was found.
