Paradiso Cinemas plans to build 45 movie theaters in Myanmar’s smaller towns this year, plus an additional 55 next year.
Paradiso – a joint venture between MAZE and Myanmar Investment Group – aims to bring cinemas to cities that do not have them yet. The company has already built one cinema in Hmawbi, Yangon Region, and one in Monywa, Sagaing Region.
A third cinema is nearly ready to open in Pyapon, Ayeyawady Region.
MAZE is headed by award-winning film actor Lwin Moe, who told Deal Street Asia last year that the joint venture would devote US$20 million to building 320-seat cinemas in cities with under 150,000 residents.
He told the Myanmar Times last year that he had interviewed people across Myanmar and found many that were unable to watch films because they did not live near cinemas.
“I found there wasn’t a single cinema in Mawlamyine despite a population of some 300,000,” he said.
The funding for the construction of the 100 cinemas comes from a loan from KBZ Bank.
Paradiso is now in the process of procuring projectors and ticketing systems for the new cinemas.
