The Yangon Fire Services Department responded to a Level 2 fire at Zayarkaymar Street in Mayangone at approximately 9:30 pm last night.
Photos of the thick smoke billows quickly flooded social media as residents from across the city watched in horror. At 9:50 pm, the fire had been categorized as Level 3 and more fire trucks were sent out.
According to Eleven, the fire had originated within a residential house and quickly spread, ultimately destroying 30 neighboring houses. A police officer said that the fire was caused by a wire shock.
A nearby monastery was turned into a makeshift water station and shelter for the hundreds of citizens who had to flee their homes.
Sadly, the blaze claimed the life of an ailing 60-year-old resident of the house where it originated.
According to the Myanmar Fire Services Department’s Facebook page, the fire was put out by 10:30 pm.
