Thai low-cost airline Nok Air is preparing to launch direct international flights between Mae Sot and Yangon starting from October 29, boosting connectivity between Yangon’s commercial capital and the Thai border trade hub.

The airline began accepting reservations on the new route on September 19. For the rest of the year, Nok Air will operate return flights on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. In January and February next year, a fourth weekly return flight will be added on Thursday. In March 2018, a fifth flight will be added on Saturday.

Flights on the new route appear sold-out until December. During that month, most return tickets sell for just over US$60.

Each flight will use one of Nok Air’s new Bombardier Q400 aircraft, which have 86 seats.

Mae Sot Thailand’s westernmost district, is home to a significant Myanmar population, including migrant workers, traders, NGO workers, and refugees. The town’s markets are known for their Myanmar imports, including clothing, traditional handicrafts, gems, and timber.

Mae Sot is also infamous for its black market, in which the illegal trading of people and narcotics are prevalent.
