New National Electronic ID registration trials now taking place in Mandalay

Yesterday, Mandalay became the first guinea pig in the government’s latest efforts to convert citizens’ paper National Registration Cards into electronic smart cards.

Mandalay citizens aged 18 and above are required to come to Bahtoo Stadium in the city’s Chanayethazan Township and provide the relevant information for obtaining a new National Electronic ID.

It’s unclear how long the trial will last as an end date has yet to be set.

“Right now, we’re collecting the necessary data, and our next step will depend on the information that we get. Lots of countries have been using smart cards for a long time, and we’re trying to imitate that,” Director Tin Chal of the Ministry of Labor, Immigration and Population’s Mandalay office told Mizzima.

Using the latest IT software, authorities will record each citizen’s information, including household registration certificates and individual photos.

However, since this is the first time that software of this kind will be implemented on such a large national scale, authorities are waiting to see how efficient and accurate the trials will be.
