Myanmar’s aquatic entrepreneurs are desperate for everyone to start buying pet fish

Myanmar, newly embarking on a path to democracy, faces many problems.

Among them is a lack of demand for pet fish, an item in state-backed media today reveals.

Myanmar’s Ornamental Fish Entrepreneurs Association – yes, it’s a thing – is seeking government help to establish a market for pet fish in the country.

The country is home to many exotic breeds, some of which are displayed by breeders at Yangon zoo on Friday mornings, according to the Global New Light of Myanmar.

But nobody is buying them.

“We need a firm market to trade the ornamental fish,” U Sai, chairperson of the association, told New Light.

Most ‘ornamental fish keepers’ are doing it as a hobby, or part-time, he said.

“The pet fish market is wider in the foreign market, with its own export market. It would be better if the government intervenes.”

We’re not sure what that intervention will look like, but personally we’re hoping for some legislation requiring each and every house to own at least one fish. Two for those with cats.
