Myanmar security forces shot and injured a 67-year-old farmer in the Indian state of Mizoram after mistaking him for an insurgent on Jan. 12, Indian police have reported.

The farmer Monondo and his wife Banati, members of the Bru ethnic group, were foraging for medicinal herbs near the Myanmar border that evening when Myanmar troops shot him twice – once in each leg.

Indian and Myanmar security forces regularly venture over the border between Mizoram and Chin State to pursue anti-government insurgents.

The local police superintendent told The Hindu that the shooting stopped after Banati shouted that she and her husband are Indian citizens, not insurgents.

When the Myanmar troops realized their mistake, they reportedly approached the couple and gave them medical supplies.
