Although the infamous Section 66(d) of the Telecommunications Law seems to primarily be a means by which the Myanmar government punishes anyone who criticizes them or the military, according to The Voice, a woman is now being sued by her ex-boyfriend under that very law, following her initial lawsuit against him.
On January 1 — what a way to start the new year, may we add — the defendant-turned-plaintiff and resident of Sanchaung Township, 33-year-old Tay Zar Wint, opened a case against his ex-girlfriend for defaming him in a public Facebook post.
After allegedly making false promises so that she would sleep with him only to break off the relationship afterwards, Tay Zar Wint’s unnamed ex-girlfriend opened a case against him at the Tamwe Township Court. However, when her ex-lover failed to show up at court hearings, the woman took to Facebook to publicly shame him.
The post read, “I want to warn everyone about the accused, Tay Zar Wint. He has been hiding from court hearings at the Tamwe Township Court, but I’m not closing the case anytime soon. If he skips out on court a sixth time, I’ll post photos and details of what you did in the papers. You ruined my life and if you don’t settle this legally, I’ll come find you and kill you.”
Consequently, Tay Zar Wint, a resident of Sanchaung Township, opened a case under Section 66(d) at the Sanchaung police station.
The Telecommunications Law, which is meant to prevent the ‘extorting, coercing, restraining wrongfully, defaming, disturbing, causing undue influence or threatening to any person by using any Telecommunications Network,’ carries with it a fine and a maximum three-year prison sentence.
