Man charged with rape and kidnapping after running away with 15-year-old ‘girlfriend’

A 32-year-old man has been sentenced to 25 years in jail for running away with his underage ‘girlfriend,’ reports Kumudra. According to the culprit, the two met and fell in love through Facebook.

The incident initially occurred last May while the girl, aged 15, was still living with her parents. One day, she told them that she was going out to greet her sister down the road, but never returned home. Instead, she and her ‘boyfriend’ Naing Min Ko ran away to Thanlyin.

Upon finding out about the affair and the fact that the two had been having sex while together, the girl’s family opened a case at the Thingangyun Police Station claiming that the defendant had kidnapped their child.

The suit was accepted and transferred to the East District Court, where a judge sentenced Naing Min Ko to 20 years jail time under the Myanmar Penal Code’s Section 376 (“Punishment for rape”) and 5 years under Section 363 (“Punishment for kidnapping”).
