A police officer investigating the rape and robbery of a young couple in Insein Township was murdered on Sunday in a sword attack outside a tea shop.
Two suspects are in custody.
A witness, who was not named, told The Voice Weekly, that the officer was beaten to death in front of Laminn teashop by two men carrying swords and sharp pipes.
“No one could stop them, because everyone was afraid,” he said.
The previous day, one of the men now in custody allegedly robbed a young couple while they were sitting on the nearby Aung Zayya bridge.
According to a family member, he asked them to hand over their jewelry and cell phones and then, holding her companion at knifepoint, raped the woman in a nearby hut.
“They said they would kill them if they told the police,” the family member said.
