When NLD legal advisor Ko Ni was shot in the head at close range at Yangon International Airport last month, horrific photos of the crime immediately surfaced on social media. Perhaps the most chilling picture, though, was of the culprit standing behind Ko Ni with a gun to his head, while the lawyer stood holding his two-year-old grandson.
The child fell out of his grandfather’s arms and onto the ground when the latter was shot, but thankfully wasn’t physically harmed. However, in the aftermath of the attack, Ko Ni’s family believes that his grandson will need to see a therapist to work through the emotional trauma.
Dr. Yee Nwe Khine, Ko Ni’s daughter and child’s aunt, told 7Day, “He wasn’t bruised or cut, but we think he was severely emotionally traumatized. One moment he’s fine, but the next moment, tears start coming out and he’s loudly crying. He’s still fragile. We don’t know how this has affected him in terms of his mental health. He was the closest person [to Ko Ni during the incident]. We’ve been trying our best not to ask him about what happened.”
Ko Ni and a taxi driver, Ne Win, were both shot and killed on January 29 at the airport’s taxi stand. The culprit was caught on the scene, but police are still tracking down additional suspects who might have hired him to carry out the attack.
