Four women have been arrested at Yangon International Airport after they were caught trying to smuggle heroin out of the country by hiding it in their underwear.

Police later determined that the culprits were originally from Shan State; two were residents of Kutkai, and the other two were from Mong Kung.

They were scheduled to leave for Taipei on a China Airlines flight yesterday morning. When they had to pass through a security check and get a pat-down however, airport security discovered drugs in the underwear of two of the four women.

Yan Saik Chin, 53, was caught with 100 grams of heroin. Her travel partner, Lee Hway Li, 40, was caught with one 95-gram bag and one 65-gram bag.

“They had wrapped the heroin in plastic bags and taped it up, and put the bags in their underwear,” an airport police officer confirmed to 7Day.

When they interrogated all four women, a third, 51-year-old La Yee, confessed that she had earlier tossed her stash in one of the airport bathrooms. When police searched the bathroom in question, they found a 365-gram packet in the trash bin.

The four culprits have been arrested and taken in for questioning.

An officer of the Yangon anti-narcotics police force said, “We’re currently interrogating them. Where did they get these drugs? Who were they transporting them for?…We’ll also be tracking down and arresting other accomplices who are involved in this crime.”
