Ethnic rebel fighter ‘Colonel Nargis’ accused after timber trader shot in leg

An ethnic rebel fighter named ‘Colonel Nargis’ was allegedly among the perpetrators of a shooting in Insein Township on Wednesday.

Two cars carrying members of an armed Karen rebel organisation reportedly rolled up to the office of a timber trader near Thandi Thukha Monastery. The posse then got into a fight with the employees.

The row ended with a 22-year-old man shot in the leg. He is now in the hospital.

“It is as usual in Yangon,” the chief of local police told 7Day Daily.

The suspects, allegedly members of the KNLA Peace Council —a splinter group of the Karen National Union (KNU) – are still on the loose.

They want independence for Karen state.

Members of the same organisation were accused of the brutal murder of a revered monk in Hpa-An last year.
