Developing cyclone turns away from Myanmar but more will follow, forecaster warns

The good-ish news for Myanmar: the deep depression, expected to turn into a cyclonic storm, off the coast is turning away from our shores. The bad? Another potential cyclone is on the way.

Or at least that’s the forecast from Myanmar’s leading weather expert, Tun Lwin.

This morning, the former head of the Meteorology and Hydrology Department posted on Facebook that the deep depression skirting Myanmar’s coastline is heading towards India.

He followed that up with an ominous image showing a second weather system blowing its way across the Bay of Bengal.

“Please take rest for 3 or 4 days, then prepare for another one,” Tun Lwin wrote. “I’ve already said that there can be 3 to 5 cyclones in the Bay of Bengal until the end of this year.”

October, the end of the monsoon, is cyclone season in Myanmar and India. The deep depression en route to India is expected to be the first of the season and will be dubbed ‘Cyclone Kyant’ if it strengthens.
