Authorities are on the hunt for a man who escaped police custody following a court hearing thanks to the help of two armed accomplices.
The defendant in question has been identified as 21-year-old Aung Phyo Wai, a resident of Bago.
According to 7Day, Aung Phyo Wai was brought to a hearing at the Bago Township Court on July 31. Afterwards, at around 4pm, he was being transferred back to the Bago No.(2) police station by motorcycle. With Aung Phyo Wai in handcuffs, the two officers who were escorting him put him in between themselves on the bike.
Along the way however, another motorcycle carrying two men in black t-shirts drove into the police bike and fled with Aung Phyo Wai.
An officer from the Bago District Police Force explained, “The road that they were on wasn’t deserted. When [the two men] tried to grab the defendant, the police yelled for help from people nearby. However, the two men had knives in their hands so no one dared help capture [Aung Phyo Wai].”
Police believe that one of the assailants was Aung Phyo Wai’s brother, and are now trying to locate all three culprits.
