Bus conductor who assaulted elderly passenger sentenced to 8 days in prison

A bus conductor who attacked a 60-year-old passenger was sentenced to eight days in prison. The conductor assaulted the passenger on November 16 after the passenger tried to bargain over his fare.

The elderly passenger was removed from the bus in North Dagon Township when he insisted on paying K100 rather than the standard K200. He reasoned that he should pay less since his destination was only one stop away, which is common practice on older Yangon.

The 19-year-old bus conductor turned himself in to police on the morning of November 17, Yangon police told 7Day Daily.

A police officer said: “We haven’t caught the driver yet. The conductor came to the police station at 11am. In accordance with the Police Act, he was sentenced immediately. He was also handed three additional charges.”
