Ay Caramba! Mexican street food in Yangon

Yangon’s hipsterification continues apace with the opening on Thursday of a much-anticipated new eatery specializing in Mexican street food.

Tin Tin Yangon, a new pop-up bar and restaurant from the guys behind Gekko, Union Bar and Grill and Parami Pizza, promises flavorful food and plenty of tequila.

They’ve worked with a Mexican chef, Jorge Bernal, to design the menu, which includes sea bass ceviche and quesadillas. Everything down to the cornflour tortillas and chipotle sauce is made from scratch.

“We think that Mexican food is really applicable to the palate of Asian people,” said Tim Reus, head of business development at 57 Below, the hospitality firm which set up the restaurants. “It’s zesty, it’s spicy, it’s fresh and it’s something different to their home market.”

Prices will be mid-range – cheaper than Gekko et al, anyway.

They’ve gone with an industrial-style design, with copper and tin tables. See what they did there? As it’s a pop-up, if they decide to change the food concept in a few months, they can. The restaurant is staying put, though.

Doors open at 6pm. Drinks are free.

Tin Tin Yangon, 116-118 Bogalazay Street. 01 559 548. Check them out on Facebook here
