Aung San museum gets makeover ahead of Martyr’s Day

A decades-old museum dedicated to independence leader Aung San is undergoing renovations ahead of celebrations honoring him later this month.

The Bogyoke Aung San Museum, in Bahan Township, will open again on July 19 for Martyr’s Day, marking 69 years since the politician was assassinated in 1947.

He was the father of Aung San Suu Kyi and the museum, a colonial-era village, was the last residence the family shared before his death.

“We are doing maintenance and repair,” general manager Nan Lao Ngin told 7Day. “We’ve only got a few things left, like cleaning.”

The interior and exterior of the museum have been redone, CCTV has been installed and a special section has been added to house the car driven by Aung San, the father of Aung San Suu Kyi.

The Martyr’s Day celebrations at the museum will be free and open to the public from 8am until 4:30pm.
