Alleged Panbedan illegal gaming center raided by police

Police raided City Center gaming center in Panbedan Township yesterday evening around 7 pm, reports Eleven. The venue was allegedly involved in illegal gambling, although authorities have declined to provide any further information while they interrogate its employees.

The center’s manager, employees, and customers who were unfortunately present at the time of the raid were arrested and are currently being held at the Panbedan police station. Witnesses say that a total of over 60 people were arrested.

The center’s machines, coins, and money were also confiscated.

Following the arrests, worried family members who seemed unaware of the center’s supposed illegalities gathered in front of the Panbedan police station.

“My daughter is an employee at the game center. We didn’t know she was at the police station until she called us around 10 pm. They won’t let us in so we don’t know why she was arrested. My daughter is an innocent woman who was just trying to earn a living,” one employee’s mother told Eleven.

Last year, Regional Minister for Security and Border Affairs Colonel Tin Aung Tun told Frontier that they were cracking down on unlicensed gaming centers and centers where illegal gambling was taking place. At the time, the minister said that 135 people had been arrested and more than K10 million seized in Yangon so far for felonies related to illegal gambling, which includes the operation of unlicensed gaming centers.
