The Myanmar Police Force Head Office has instructed police stations country-wide to open both email and Facebook accounts in order to be more efficient and up-to-date when investigating cases, and to be able to more easily share information with citizens.
Deputy Officer Tin Win told 7Day Daily, “We’d been told since November [to open the accounts]. It’ll allow us to collaborate with citizens when we have a case and to analyze news that spread on social media. We’re doing it as a precautionary means to prevent crimes in advance.”
FYI — there are a total of 330 township and 1250 police stations in the country.
It also turns out that despite seeming otherwise, not everyone in Myanmar knows how to use Facebook, at least not in a professional setting. In order to ensure the success of this new endeavor, authorities are trying to find police personnel at each station who are familiar enough with Facebook’s technology to operate their respective pages.
