6-year-old boy in Lanmadaw checked for Zika infection

Dr Than Htun Aung, the deputy director of the Public Health Department in Naypyidaw, said a 6-year-old boy from Lanmadaw Township in Yangon is being checked for infection with the Zika virus.

The tests began on November 16, and the results are being examined by the Yangon National Health Laboratory.

Dr Than Htun Aung told 7Day Daily: “We will know the results on November 17. We can only say the boy is suspected of being a Zika patient at this time.”

Dr Win Lwin, the director of the Yangon Public Health Department, said: “The child suspected of Zika infection is sick. Red spots appeared on his skin, and his eyes hurt, which are symptoms we need to check.”

The Ministry of Health and Sports announced Myanmar’s first case of Zika infection when it was confirmed that a pregnant woman living in Sanchaung Township had contracted the virus. She has reportedly received treatment for the disease.

The Myanmar government has advised women to avoid pregnancy until the risk of Zika infection decreases.
