52nd Street night market coming this month

Markets, markets, and more markets! Following the, erm, ‘successful’ establishment of Yangon’s first night market last November, the new book market slated to open this Saturday, and the ‘upscale’ market that will open later this year, plans are already in place for Yangon’s second night market.

Authorities say that the space is already set up for the new market, which will stretch along 52nd Street, and that they are just awaiting a list of vendors from township officials. Although no specific date has yet been set, officials believe that the market will probably open up in the second week of this month.

The 52nd Street market will have approximately 130 stalls available for vendors currently operating in Bohtataung and Pazundaung townships, specifically along Anawrahta, Maha Bandula, Bohtataung Pagoda, and Bo Myat Tun Streets. Pazundaung vendors will get priority when it comes to nabbing a space.

While this is a small step towards solving the cramped space problem — not to mention preventing future disputes between vendors and the YCDC — 130 isn’t nearly enough for the current market-less 3000+ vendors. Let’s also hope that this new market is much less cramped and more beneficial for vendors than the first market has (so far) been.
