BAHAN

Coming up north from downtown, we hit one of Yangon’s better known townships, Bahan. Why famous? Because Aung San Suu Kyi’s house is there on University Avenue. Tourists still go to the house to see where the dissident, Nobel laureate and Myanmar’s most popular politician spent a total of 15 years under house arrest until she was freed in 2010. Much has changed since the ‘The Lady’ and the National League for Democracy came to power in elections in November of 2015. The house now has armed guards provided by police. But don’t worry. You can still take pictures out front. Bahan is also home to Kandawgyi Park, a nice place to stroll around. Need some furniture? Excel Tower at Shwegondaing Junction has a few shops, and right under the junction is noted bar The Lab. Sayasan Road runs alongside part of the township and there you’ll find plenty of other kinds of restaurants and surprising new shops. This is where a Tony Roma’s rib joint opened up in 2015.
