Ahlone Township is best-known for being home to the Asia World Port Terminal, which processes around 60 percent of Yangon's port traffic. The company that runs the port and its leaders spent years on the US sanctions blacklist for its alleged ties to human rights violations and the heroin trade. Those sanctions were scrapped late last year, so business is set to boom. Ahlone is also home to Thakin Mya Park — named after one of Myanmar's independence leaders who was assassinated along with the national hero, General Aung San, in 1947. It is, like all parks in Yangon, a popular spot for romantic strolls.
