A day at Yangon’s brand-new, half-finished shopping mall

I drove my electric bicycle down Shwedagon Pagoda Road yesterday toward Junction City. It was the mall’s opening day, and I was curious about what it would offer. As I approached the entrance, I noticed the excavator-mounted hydraulic jackhammer pounding away at the concrete. I said to my companion: “This will be a pleasant shopping

Coconuts Yangon Fashion & shopping

The cliché goes that Myanmar loves to shop…in Bangkok. While the well-heeled still head overseas for serious indulgences, Yangon is home to a glorious selection of local retail offerings. Bogyoke Market is home to scores of vendors selling beautiful fabrics from across the country, as well as the usual tourist souvenirs. International brands can be found in the few malls, the newest of which, Myanmar Plaza, is a multi-story structure typical of the region. Fashion styles are changing, too, though the traditional longyi is still the dress of choice for both men and women. If there’s something worth buying or a style worth following (or puzzling at), you can bet we’ll be reporting it on Coconuts Yangon.
