Clothing equality in Myanmar? Behold the pocket longyi

As a Jezebel writer put it recently: “I love purses. I love them. I also happen to not want to carry one most of the time.”

If you’re a woman who has resented carrying a bag, or had one stolen with all your belongings including keys inside, you probably know this: pockets are a feminist issue.

A dude can stuff everything into his pants – or, in Myanmar, the folds of his longyi – but ladies must choose, buy, pack and lug around a purse.

Even in Myanmar where both men and women wear the pocketless longyi, the male style is loose enough for a man to tuck in his possessions while the female version, commonly known as htamein, is far too tight for such indulgences.

Now, behold a new – and somewhat overdue, in our opinion – innovation: the pocket longyi.

The creation was unveiled by Cici, a local brand which specializes in modern twists on traditional Myanmar designs, at the launch of their new shop on Insein Road yesterday.

“The pocket longgyi is the epitome of Cici’s modern, traditional concept you are all familiar with,” the brand said in a statement. “We want to help you reinvent the way you wear your longyi, now with a touch of modernity, not to mention functionality.”

The longyis are avaliable for pre-order, so interested readers can call Cici on 09774741466 or 09420035305.

No haters, please.
