Short film at Goethe Villa (Friday)

Myanmar-born New Zealand filmmaker Yamin Tun presents her short WAIT. The story follows a Chinese migrant family in New Zealand in the 1980s. “The word ‘wait’ is evocative for me and many asylum seekers because we spent so many years waiting for immigration status,” she said in a statement. “Many of my memories are of waiting on plastic chairs in immigration halls for another stamp on a piece of paper.”

Sunset photo exhibit at Wired on 39 (Friday)

‘Sunset’, the second solo exhibition from Yangon-based photographer Linaung Pyae, opens at the downtown gallery Wired on 39. Runs through November 5.

Wa restaurant opening party at Root (Saturday)

Yangon’s new Wa restaurant celebrates its official launch with a big opening party. Guests get a complimentary dish of freshly harvested roast rice grains as well as 2 for 1 cocktails and selected wine and beer between 5pm and 7pm.

Momo the elephant’s birthday at Yangon Zoo (Saturday and Sunday)

Momo, the most famous elephant at Yangon Zoo, celebrates her 63rd birthday on Sunday. That’s right – born in 1955, she has outlived multiple Burmese leaders. She’s survived two military regimes and witnessed the slow transition to civilian government. To celebrate, the zoo is throwing a party – mostly aimed at children.
