Video: Crowds rush into first KFC in Myanmar

Nothing says ‘opening up to the West’ like Kentucky Fried Chicken…

Several hundred people crowded into the downtown branch of Myanmar’s first KFC when it opened on Tuesday lunchtime.

Many literally pushed through the glass doors in excitement, as staff clapped, before waiting in line to pick up buckets of chicken.

Two chicken thighs went for K3,500 – above the daily wage of many in the country.

But KFC Myanmar, the result of a partnership between Yum! Brands and Yoma Strategic Holdings, believes it can target a sizeable segment of the population.

JR Ching, from KFC Myanmar, told us: “We are quite accessible to a large part of the population and we do expect to have several outlets open by the end of 2015.”
