In multicultural Yangon, there are few places that bring together East and West in total foodie harmony like Union Bar & Grill. The sleek-yet-comfy restaurant infuses their satisfying dishes and potent cocktails with Yangon’s myriad cultural influences. (Now, if could just figure out world peace on a plate, we’d be all set.)

Union Bar & Grill celebrated its 5th birthday last week by introducing a new cocktail program by 57 Below Group Bar Manager Jen Queen.

Jen’s seasonal menu for Union Bar & Grill features an ideal blend of her culinary cocktail creations such as Hittin Skins, a zero-waste cocktail made with white rum, refreshing lime and mint stem sherbet, and caramelized mango tapache. Husky Vegan features house infused dried banana whisky, pineapple husk reduction, aquafaba and lemon. Royal Bermuda Yacht Club might be a lesser known cocktail from Trader Vic’s 1947 Bartender’s Guide, but the combo of pineapple, banana rum, lime, orange sec, and house falernum is making a comeback. You read it here first.

The menu also includes cocktails crafted by each of Union’s talented team of bartenders. All were designed around local ingredients, from kaffir and pandan leaf to watermelon and jujube, bringing you local tastes in each sip.

Choose from a selection of cocktails aptly named (as any bartender knows) “Pour Your Heart Out” and a dollar from each drink sale is donated to a local charity such as Doh Eain. Doh Eain, which works to improve private and public space in Yangon, recently received K700,000 from this special menu for their World Environment Day initiative.

Union’s birthday celebration also starred an exciting pop up dinner hosted by guest chef Amy Baard from Farm to Table in Phnom Penh in collaboration with Kokkoya Organic farm in North Dagon.

The next guest chef to hit Union will be Singaporean Chef Shen Tan who will host a 2 night, 8 course pop up dinner named “What the Duck” at the end on June. She’ll be serving creative, modern Singaporean dishes such as Ducking Fun (chee cheong fun filled with duck and pan seared foie gras) and Thrice Cooked Tea Smoked Duck. The meal finishes off with a decadent dessert named Where The Duck, which includes duck bak kwa, salted duck egg yolk ice cream, crispy duck skin and Gula Melaka butterscotch. Reservation enquiries can be made via emailing nikki@57below.com.
