According to Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the head of public relations for the National Disaster Management Agency estimated that the losses due to flooding in Jakarta had, by Wednesday, reached more than Rp 1 trillion ($78 million).
“According to my estimates, there has already been more than 1 trillion in losses, but later could increase the potential for flooding is not finished,” Sutopo said on Wednesday as quoted by Antara.
He said that amount was the result of estimate the damage caused by the flooding as well as its impact on business and community activities.
Sutopo also said that there was still potential for flooding in Jakarta until the end of March, so the cost of the floods can get much higher before the end of the rainy season.
On top of its economic impact, the floods have also forced around 5,900 people from their homes according to the latest estimates.
