Honestly, a fine of any amount probably isn’t enough to teach this callous young lady the error of her ways.

Illya Natassia Bte Abdul Manaf, 23, has been found guilty of abandoning her pet cat at Canberra Road and sentenced to cough up $2,500 in fines.

The cat itself was found next to its pet carrier by a member of the public at a staircase landing on Jan 10, the same day it was cast off. Stupidly enough, the carrier Illya left behind held her personal details, and the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) promptly took action.

When questioned, Illya admitted to abandoning the cat after a family conflict. No details were given about said family conflict, but really, nothing excuses you for deserting a pet.

Anyhow, the story has a happy ending for the feline. The cat has been successfully rehomed with the help of an unnamed animal welfare group (we’re guessing it’s the Cat Welfare Society).

“AVA takes a stern view on pet abandonment,” the authority wrote in a press release. “Safeguarding animal welfare is a shared social responsibility requiring the cooperation of all stakeholders, including the public.”

For abandoning her pet, Illya could have landed herself with the maximum fine of $10,000 and/or a year in prison.
