Bankrupted, depressed, and suicidal after his relationship with his son took a turn for the worse, Philip decided to abandon the chaos of city living and become a fish farmer in the waters off Pulau Ubin. And his decision has certainly made things better, according to the short documentary about him produced by Project Unsung Heroes.

Living off the grid didn’t just make his life easier (scenic views of the sunset, free “air conditioning”, no water bills, and 12 dogs do help though) — it imbued him with a sense of purpose. After experiencing a true kampung spirit through tight bonds with his neighbors and involving himself in social work (including coastal clean-up and mangrove restoration projects), Philip hopes to leave behind a legacy that his son would be proud of.
