Three Zika cases confirmed at Serangoon North Avenue 1

A Zika cluster has emerged at Serangoon North Avenue 1, with three cases of the locally transmitted virus infection confirmed in the area. The National Environment Agency (NEA) was alerted of the cluster on Wednesday (Jul 26) and began vector control operations and outreach efforts in its surroundings.

In a statement, NEA said that it “has been conducting preventive inspections in the vicinity before the cluster at Serangoon North Avenue 1 was notified to detect and destroy any potential mosquito breeding habitats”.

Residents have been reminded to keep vigilant and eliminate mosquito breeding habitats to keep an eye out for asymptomatic or mild, undiagnosed cases — these could lead to the virus spreading further if there are mosquitoes remaining in the area.

Within the Serangoon Garden area, two locally transmitted Zika incidents emerged at Parry Avenue in early June and two more at Kensington Park Drive in late June.

“Zika information leaflets and insect repellents will be distributed to households to raise the general awareness of Zika, and reiterate the need for source reduction to prevent mosquito breeding. Residents are advised to apply repellent as a precaution,” NEA announced.
