Thief stole more than $600 worth of coins from six stalls at Whampoa Hawker Centre

Whoever did this probably needed a ton of spare change. Like, literally.

On Monday morning, hawker Bao Guang Qing noticed something amiss at this stall. There were footprints on the ledge and table of his fish head steamboat stall — an unusual sight. So he checked his pail carrying about $600 worth of coins and found it empty, according to The New Paper.

In despair, the 48-year-old PR from China called the police, and they began a four-hour investigation. Turns out five other stalls lost money, but only around $20 each. One of the produce delivery ladies who witnessed the inspection speculated that the robber could’ve crept into the stalls from their openings at the top. But we’re curious as to how the thief made off with the heavy haul.

Since this is the first time a burglary has happened at Bao’s two-year-old stall, his family is steering on the side of caution and planning to install a CCTV camera (which would cost about $1,000) to ward off future break-ins. As for the other affected stalls, they simply chalked up their small losses to an unfortunate event.

Investigations are still underway.
