Here’s something you don’t see everyday — a piece of positive news about SMRT (amidst all the train delays, flooded tunnels, and what not). A kind SMRT train captain was recently lauded on social media for his helpful efforts in finding and returning the lost wallet of a Thai businessman.

Bangkok-based Natthapon Asswisessiwakul, who was in Singapore on Tuesday for a business trip, realized he had misplaced his wallet shortly after landing at Changi Airport. Calling the situation a “nightmare”, he explained that his cash and credit cards were in the wallet, and he was rushing to a meeting in the next hour.

Luckily, SMRT train captain Muhammad Faisal Mohd Yusoff heard of his predicament and quickly lent a hand. The 26-year-old handed the man’s wallet over to staff at Tanah Merah MRT station, who subsequently returned it to its owner.

In a Facebook post on Friday, Natthapon praised Faisal’s actions, thanking him for making his day and making him trust Singapore.

Faisal, who has been with SMRT Trains for four years, told The Straits Times that he was on duty at the airport line when he saw the wallet in the train cabin at Changi Airport station. Since there was no one around, he picked it up, called his superior, and handed the wallet over.

In a show of gratitude, Natthapon met him at Tanah Merah station to take a picture with him and invite him to lunch, but Faisal had to decline as he was working.

According to ST, this isn’t the first time Faisal has returned lost belongings to their owners — one of several past incidents includes a handbag he spotted at Pasir Ris station, containing about 1,000 ringgit (S$321) and an Identification Card.

SMRT subsequently responded on Facebook to thank Natthapon for sharing his appreciation for Faisal.
